Painter, printmaker, and interdisciplinary artist Deborah Santoro will share how she was inspired to create her artwork Veneer of Civilization for Call and Response: Kindred, the latest installment of FAM's annual collaboration with ArtsWorcester, and how this work connects to her broader artistic practice.

Responding to Steve Locke’s photograph Untitled (Our Honeymoon), Family Pictures, Blue (2015), which includes a depiction of an 18th century slaving vessel, Santoro carved and re-interpreted the 17th century John Foster map of New England, largely redacting Colonial-era place names. Through this process, she examines the lasting impact of violence embedded in placemaking, and the “veneer” that shapes ideas of
home, history, and inheritance.
